What Is GEO, and Does Your Small Business Actually Need It?
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring your website and content so that AI tools — ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews — can find it, understand it, and recommend it when someone asks a question your business can answer. If you run a small or mid-sized B2B company, the short answer is: yes, you need to start paying attention to it now, before your competitors do.
Why this is happening
A growing share of buyers now start their research by asking an AI assistant a direct question — "who does X for companies like mine" — instead of typing keywords into Google and scrolling through ten blue links. If your business isn't structured in a way those tools can read and trust, you're simply not part of the answer, no matter how good your product or service actually is.
How GEO is different from traditional SEO
Traditional SEO optimizes for ranking in a list of links. GEO optimizes for being the answer itself — or being cited as a source within one. That means the tactics shift: instead of just targeting keywords, you're focused on clear, direct, well-structured content that answers real questions unambiguously, in language an AI system can lift and trust.
Three things you can do this month
• Audit what's actually visible. Ask ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity the questions your buyers would ask ("who helps [your ICP] with [your service]"). If you don't show up, that's your starting point.
• Restructure your key pages for direct answers. Add clear headers, put the answer to the obvious question in the first sentence, and use FAQ sections where it makes sense. AI tools favor content that states things plainly.
• Be specific, not vague. "We help businesses grow" is invisible. "We help pre-seed B2B SaaS founders build their first product marketing foundation" is something an AI system can match to a real question.
GEO isn't a trend to wait out. It's the next version of being findable. The businesses that treat it seriously now will be the ones AI tools recommend later.
